Review: Leapfrog Reader

I had purchased a Leapfrog Reader for Big J during a Robinsons Sales in June 2015. It came in a bundle which includes the Leapfrog pen and 2 of the compatible books: Cars and Brave. It comes together with a Sample booklet for Big J to try on the writing and also, pages from various books for the Leapfrog pen.
Initially with just that 2 came-along books, Big J was not interested in them. I then purchased the other books, mainly for kindergarten level, hoping he might gain interest in them. True enough, he started reading them.

Price
The price of the bundle is $79.90, which includes the Leapfrog pen (U.P. SGD$65.90: pen and sample book) and 2 books (U.P. SGD18.90 each).
I would say, getting the bundle is more worthy provided that your child loves the bundled books. So for my case, I could have bought just the pen and purchase other titles that Big J likes.

Educational Level
Depends on individual child, some fast learners would love to have them at an earlier age. As for Big J, he only really use it more frequently after the pen sat in a corner for about 4 months.
Also, Leapfrog has quite a substantial number of titles for various age. Hence, I have a greater choice of books for my two Js as they grow.
Right now, He is using Ready for Kindergarten (SGD18.90) and Word Building Flashcards (SGD21.90).
For the Word Building Flashcards, I find it helpful in teaching Phonics. It is worth the investment. However, if you are able to sound the beginning sounds, blends and digraphs yourself, the you could just purchase this Flashcards and give the pen a miss.
